J R R Tolkien is possibly the most important influence on English literature of the twentieth century. Along with other members of The Inklings, including C S Lewis and Charles Williams, he brought a new depth and mysticism to fantasy writing and created a whole new genre of writing. Seven for the dwarves in their halls of stone
Nine for mortal men doomed to die
One for the dark Lord on his dark throne
One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them
One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.'
