This is the real country which lies behind and overshadows the everyday England. -  The England of literature, of J R R Tolkien's Shire,  the Logres of  C S Lewis, the South Country of Rudyard Kipling and the setting for John Masefield's Box of Delights. - The legendary Isle of the Mighty, where King Arthur reigns, Robin Hood and Maid Marian haunt the glades of Sherwood Forest in the Morris dance, and the Green Man peers from the shadows of ancient trees.

Successions of invasions have been absorbed, each new wave of 'foreigners' adapting to the ways of the Land and adopting it's legends as their own- First the little dark people, who became the Faerie, then the Celts, the Romans (already a mixed assortment of races!), the Saxons, the Danes, and the Normans. Along with these invaders came peaceful traders such as the Jews and the Phoenicians, some of whom remained here, and later, Moors, Flemish weavers and Huguenots fleeing persecution in Europe.   Each brought their own contribution to the melting-pot that became England, as the conquerors were themselves conquered
